I loved it, so I shared it with friends. None of them liked it at all. I thought it was funny and quirky. They thought I was weird. I thought, maybe I was wrong, so I read it again. I still love it. Maybe there is something wrong with me. Also like Freddy and Federicka and the Pacific and other...

An absolutely amazing piece of work. Read to the end and you won't be disappointed.

The hatred of coffee all makes sense in the end.

I protest the sexuality of the Brazilians!

I loved this from the get-go. Delightful, goofy, wordy Halprin fun.

    Enjoy it over coffee...

This is not my favorite Helprin book, but I loved it nonetheless. I hate coffee and thought his tacts to avoid coffee were hilarious. It's a wonderful, complex tale. I guess from the comments below it's not for everyone, but it worked for me!

Not quite the impact of Soldier of The Great War but still full of surprising scenes.

I really enjoyed this book and recommended it to many friends. No one else seemed to take to it quite the way I did. (The main character's hatred of coffee is especially amusing to those of us who love a good cup of joe.) I've tried reading other Mark Helprin books and haven't enjoyed them nearly as much. I think this book is a departure from his others.
