“A useful, amusing social commentary. Worth a read.”

This is without a doubt one of the best books I have read in the last couple of years. It was hilarious, but at the same time it had a lot of deeper meaning. I cried through this book, and sometimes because I was laughing too hard, and sometimes because I just couldn't not cry. It is one of the books that you get the feeling you will get something new out of it every time you read; another pearl, another truth. I may have found it at the public library, but I plan to make it part of my personal library ASAP so that I can read it again and again.”

A sort of Odyssey-like fairy tale of the modern age. I liked it even better than Memoir From an Antproof Case. Which I loved. Helprin doesn't give you all the answers. He's quick and he expects you to keep up!”

As another reviewer stated, there was basically a major laugh on every page or so. Also, how amazing is it that Prince Frederick (Prince Charles) is simultaneously the butt of most of the jokes in the book and the hero of the quest tale in the book. An amazing, wonderful read!”

I highly recommend this anyone. You need not be a monarchist to read this (believe me, I'm not!).
This novel is a sleeper. Read it!”

Helprin makes the characters caricatures and yet endearing. The ridiculousness of the circumstances of both Freddy and Fredericka make you laugh out loud and feel happy as they manage to bungle through their 'quest'. The end was touching and sweet - if not as quirky as the rest of the story. It's fun to read - a little long at times but still entertaining. ”

I skipped a few paragraphs, suggesting that Helprin was writing more loosely than I wanted him to, and sometimes the humor was so broad as to be painful, but overall this was a great book. I didn't mind the length at all. I appreciated being able to sink my teeth into a story that was sweet, funny and substantial all at once. Addresses some of the same issues as the movie The Queen, and the book An Uncommon Reader.”
