Amazing writing. I'm not sure I share the worldview of the author, but he very beautifully expresses his aesthetics of honor.

A few of the stories were interesting, but I honestly couldn't get into it.

Mark Helprin is a master. His book, A Soldier of the Great War was one of the best books I've ever read. This book is a collection of his short stories. Some were about Jewish rabbis and holocaust survivors making a new life for themselves, things of which I really cannot relate. But some of his stories involved soldiers and sailors, and beachfront life in the 1950's. I thought these were real gems. This is a good book for a beach or for sitting at a picnic table at a local park on a lazy afternoon. Helprin's imagery will take you away.

A collection of new and previously published short stories that range from the terrible and sad, to the miraculously optimistic, depicting the best of human nature and the worst of human circumstance, but always with the greatest sensitivity and humanity. Recommended reading to anyone with an interest beyond mundane narrative, and recommend to avoid for readers of pulp.

I am typically not a fan of short stories but enjoyed this book immensely! Helprin's writing is so rich and lush, each short story satisfied me completely. Beautiful.
