Asterix has a timeless appeal. Terrific stories, spectacular illustrations, extraordinary puns, charming characters, clever gags...i'm running out of adjectives here. Goscinny and Uderzo, thanks for a brilliantly executed series. I can't get enough of it.

Edifus is assigned by Cleopatra to build a magnificent temple to Julius Caesar. Unfortunately, Edifus is totally incompetent and he has a major rival. He goes to the Gaul village to ask help from Getafix. They go back to Egypt and give the workers magic potion to speed up construction.

The other architect tries to sabotage things but gets stopped. Caesar tries to cheat by using his troops to stop the workers from getting to their jobs, but Asterix and Dogmatix get a message to Cleopatra that Caesar is cheating. She gets mad and confronts Caesar and gets him to stop.

There's a running joke about Cleopatra's nose and the joke runs far, far too long.

This one is one of my favorites. I have a pug nose myself, so all the remarks about Cleopatra's nose were particularly funny. What a nose! And what a chariot!

Cleopatra wants a spectacular palace built in Alexandria in three months to make a show of the famous Egyptian competence to Caesar. The appointed architect Edifis enlists the help of the courageous Gauls to make the deadline, despite an assortment of saboteurs.

What can i say about this book? it is absolutely hilarious!!! The insinuations about Cleopatra's nose are really amusing. And it is perhaps the first and only time you'll see Druid getafix smitten by a woman. Asterix obviously saves the day, while obelix makes you laugh till you fall off your chair, with his appetite for roast boar, soldiers and oh yes almonds. This is one of the few books where dogmatix is shown to have a pivotal role. All in all a great read. Question: is roast boar actually that good to eat?

To impress Julius Caesar, Queen Cleopatra promises to build the Roman Emperor a magnificent palace in just three months. Of course, Asterix has to get involved. By the time his feisty group from Gaul have finished, they’ve outwitted the Roman army, too.

A friend recently recommended this as something I might enjoy and pass along to my daughter (11 years old) as a fun way to learn some history.

This is quality stuff, but what really astounded me was how long ago it was written & drawn! WAY ahead of its time...

There weren't as many history tidbits as I had hoped...though there are some subtle lessons which older readers might absorb. Regardless, these tales do offer an introduction to different cultures in a truly entertaining way!

I grew up reading Asterix and while there may be more classic tales in the series, this has always been, hands down, my favorite. Caesar features largely in this one, and he was always one of the better foils for the cheerful, unbeatable Gaulish pair. Not to mention the incredible detail in the artwork when Cleopatra and her entourage roll into a scene... the Egyptian architecture and costumes are mindblowingly creative. Nose jokes abound along with the usual visual and linguistic puns. While my expectations were low as far as the film adaptation were concerned, I'm not sure it would be possible to do justice to the book under the best circumstances. It's just that good.
