This is one of the best examples of the 'you are there' style of Vietnam war journalism. That said, I wouldn't go so far as to say it is a definitive or even all encompassing look at the American experience. Readers who come to this book believing that movies and novels that accentuate the chaotic, confused and surreal aspects of the war, such as, say, 'Apocalypse Now' represent the Vietnam War with great accuracy will find that viewpoint supported here.
