This is the book which triggered am interest an Art and Impressionism in me, which made me visit Art Galleries and collect Great Masters art books and posters.... it opened a new world for me. Gave an insight into a creative person's mind and world. I simply loved it.

Sad and inspirational story of Vincent Van Gogh's life. Supported by his brother Theo and from an art seller family, painting was a good fit for a life. Van Gogh was a perfectionist and wanted to get the paining right. First he wanted to be a proficient illustrator so he learned form specially by drawing models and landscapes. Then he was introduced to the Parisian impressionists and wanted to get color right so he went to southern France and painted landscapes and people. The sad part is his total inability to sell during his lifetime. The story somehow leads me to believe that this was somewhat his brother's fault. But it may have been just the revolutionary nature of impressionist painting in Europe at the time. Highly recommended to art lovers and specially to modern / impressionist fans ;-)

This beautiful book captures the psychology of Vincent van Gogh, his life, his paintings, and his failed relationships. The "Arles, France" section of the novel is especially riveting.

A wee bit histrionic. Obviously influential to the cult of VG.

Again, Irving Stone does an amazing job in showing us the harsh and difficult life of Vincent van Gogh. Surrounded by an influential family, inspiring and crazy artists and passion about art, this man is a very interesting subject to read about.

Irving Stone's research is extensive, and this book is based on hundreds of letters between Vincent and his brother Theo. Learned so many new things about a very known man. I read it in 3 days!
