This Lullaby

by Sarah Dessen

"I had no illusions about love... It came, it went, it left casualties or it didn't. People weren't meant to be together forever, regardless of what the songs say." Remy doesn't believe in love. And why should she? Her romance novelist mother is working on her fifth marriage, and her father, a '70s hippie singer, left her with only a one-hit wonder song to remember him by. Every time ... I didn't like this book because it had the same plot as a lot of her other books. I found it slightly boring, since i have read almost all her other books. However, i did like Someone Like You, and The Truth About Forever.

This book was a great pick me up novel. This book is great for when you wnat to read a happy romance novel. It is the classic tale of a someone who doesn't believe in love. Then after faliing in love denies that she ever did. It is one of those stories that you will never forget. Sarah Dessen is a great writer of stories like this one.

Remy never knew her dad. He was a musician who left her mom and died before Remy could ever get to know him - all she has of her dad is a song he wrote to her when she was a baby. Subsequent husbands (aka step dads - four, to be exact) don't do much to convince Remy that true love is even a possibility. The summer before she heads across the country for college is supposed to be a carefree one - she has no desire to leave behind any attachments - especially with a guy. So when Dexter, the clumsy, curly haired musician decides they've "got something," Remy is quick to shut him down. Bless his heart, that darling, optimistic boy gets under her skin until she has to finally decide whether or not real love is even worth trying.

While the story is compelling (the writing is often humorous and I was engaged enough to want to find out how it would all end up), I just did not like Remy as a character. I know that her attitude was a result of a harsh and reality-filled upbringing with step-dads coming and going like the latest fads, but I still found it grating on me. I didn't like how much Remy depended on alcohol and one night stands to help her feel better about her refusal to commit to one boy. I don't doubt that there are real teenagers out there like this, or who have friends like this - and probably they would really love this book. I can imagine that it may even be great for some teenage girls to have Remy as a character they can relate to. But for me, the foul language and stupid choices got in my way of enjoying the love story.

    Review from www.mrsmagooreads.com

Over the years, Remy has had more boyfriends than her mother has had husbands, and that's saying something. When she's on the hunt, Remy knows exactly what she's looking for, and Dexter is not a typical candidate. So how does he manage to get the title of Remy's Boyfriend? Remy convinces herself that it's just for the summer, and in September they'll go their separate ways, but Dexter seems to have other plans.

More than anything, Remy wants to escape the clutches of the well-known song that her father wrote for her before abandoning her. This Lullaby. Some people might love it if there's a famous song about them, but not Remy. She hates This Lullaby as much as she hates Dexter's messy personality.

Will Remy and her mother learn to live with the surprises that life throws them? Or will they simply twist everything around to fit their needs, and never really live at all?

I liked "This Lullaby" more than Sarah Dessen's "Dreamland", but not as much as "The Truth About Forever".

Sarah Dessen is my 2nd favorite young adult author...ever! Her books are always pure fun to read, and you'll laugh out loud, I promise you.
This lullabye is the quirky love story of gawky Dexter and studious, Stanford bound Remy.
    Read it.

I loved this book! It wasn't anything I expected. It really makes you think and that's what I love about Sarah Dessen even though this is only the second book I have read by her. She really gives a new perspective on love. MUST-READ!!
