“Generically speaking, Burke is a hard-edged, multifaceted antihero whose post-prison career goal is to live off the scam. Cunning, violent when necessary, he's steadfastly loyal to a cadre of offbeat characters -- each outside the "citizen" roll call -- who cooperate on ventures to rescue, protect or avenge the abused and take out the abusers. Specific to Hard Candy: I believe that some of Vachss' best writing is found in this work. Burke's mourning for Belle is poignant; he's deadened by the loss. The title character, Candy, and Strega (back again) strut their stuff to cold response. Again Vachss' plotting is intricate, never obvious (to me) and the unraveling replete with violence and revenge. After inundating myself in three Vachss' novels without breaking for another author, I come away sort of shell shocked by these works. I fear that a feminist would likely fire a retroactive salvo into Vachss' portrayal of certain of Burke's women.”

Then I read Hard Candy and realized I am now officially an addict. if you have not read any of Vachss, read them in the order I did. It is like a trilogy and each one follows naturally after the last one. The beginning to Hard Candy is THE BEST opening to a book I have ever read, but it only is that way if you have read the other two books of that trilogy in the right order. if you like your detective fiction "hard boiled" I venture to say this is as hard as it is going to get and very well written. I am hooked. ”

Read one of these and enter a different world--not pleasant, but filled with someting more than love and loyalty. His dog Blossom, is probably my favorite character--or perhaps the mute Max or the enigmatic, Mama. Let me know what you think.”
