  • Alexandra "Allie": A stubborn girl with a very strong will, very goal oriented, though not a planner. She is fourteen. She was riding in a white Toyota when she was killed.
  • Nicholas "Nick": A boy who dies in the same car crash as Allie. He died with chocolate smeared on his face, so he has to go to Everlost with chocolate on his face forever. He is a bit timid. Though in side is one of the strongest characters very witty.
  • Lief: The boy who discovers Allie and Nick shortly after they died and shows them how it is to be an Afterlight in Everlost. He has lived in dead forest for a long time, the largest place he could find in Everlost where he wouldn't sink through the ground from standing too long. Allie gave him his name because he'd forgotten his own.
  • Mary Hightower: The self-proclaimed expert on Everlost, she has written many books on living in the world between life and death. She also thinks of herself as the mother of the many children stuck in this world, being one of the oldest inhabitants at fifteen. She will do anything to protect the many children she has taken under her wing.
  • Stradivarius "Vari": A good friend of Mary's who loves to play the violin. He's a little prone to jealousy, but you can expect that sort of thing from a kid whose been stuck at nine years old for one hundred forty-six years.
  • McGill: A rumored monster in Everlost. It is said that he hates Everlost children so much that he kidnap them and tortures them for all of eternity.
  • Johnnie-O: The leader of the Altar Boys, a band of Afterlights that often robs Greensouls who pass threw his territory. He is inconsiderate and careless.
  • Purple-puss: A kid in Johnnie-O's gang; has dark purple lips, most likely from sucking on a grape jawbreaker when he died.
  • Raggedy Andy: A member of Johnnie-O's gang characterized by his candy-apple-red hair.
  • Pinhead: Called so after his slightly small head, he is the right-hand man of the McGill.
  • The Haunter: A mysterious character who specializes in the "Criminal Arts": ecto-ripping, skinjacking, etc.
  • Meadow: An Afterlight who lives with Mary. She died in the 1970s and still retains some of the hippie culture.
  • Speedo: A Finder who works for Mary. So named because he died in his swimsuit.
