    Well worth reading.
This book is actually more like three separate books - one about marijuana, a second about migrant labor, and a third about porn. The common theme is how some very common social practices in the US are also illegal, and how the government spends way too much time, money and makes people miserable by trying to impose christian moral standards on what adults do behind closed doors.
Those three mini-books vary in length and quality - the one about marijuana is very good, the one about migrant labor very short, and the third is more like a biography of a single person and his battles with the federal govt. Still, they're well written, well researched and thought provoking.

Schlosser offers us a good piece of investigative journalism with this installment. The book deals with America's black market of pornography, marijuana and weapons. He articulates some of the major contradictrions within the American legal system. He tells the story of an Indiana man sentenced to life in prison for introducing a grower with a buyer in the early 1980s. This took place at a time when crack was ravaging our nation's inner cities. The most staggering information int he book lies in the multi-billions of dollars Americans spend on these black market activities annually. Bootlegging still proves profitable, years after Capone!

Okay, I could only get through the first two sections, which were interesting but very detailed, then I gave up when it got to the last section of the book. My brain could not absorb all the details he puts in his book.

Schlosser offers informative reading, but sometimes he's too focused on individuals to paint a very clear picture of the larger scenario. He does pick good individuals to follow, though. The personal stories here in are memorable and illustrative--although how representative they are is hard to say.

Although this book is very informative and overall fun to read, the section on marijuana is definitely the best written. The other sections on migrant workers and the porn industry are a bit lacking and rather dry. Regardless, I still really enjoyed the book.

an in-depth examination of the underbelly of capitalism and how systems of supply and demand operate in essentially the same manner in the black market as they would in legitimate business.
