A pulse-pounding romp in a world of tunnel-vision and blind alleys. Much like the world of intrigue and counter-intelligence that Alec survives in, each character's motive is suspect and information is only spoon-fed to the reader slowly, never all at once. The result is a paranoiac, whiplash...

It has been ages since Ive read a book this intellectually and emotionally satisfying. The ending - though not what the reader would hope for - is perfect. This book is the antithesis of the typical James bond adventure and so much more realistic. One of the best things about this book is that it lends itself well to philosophical debates on matters of truth and loyalty

Might be the best spy novel I've ever read, but Graham Greene's The Human Factor is challenging for that title right now. This was a great read, though.

a gripping spy story, if a bit confusing at times. Le Carre (he's English and that's not his real name) worked for the British secret service, so he must know what he's talking about. It's a bleak book, don't expect any James Bond glamour. He tells it like it was, so definitely worth reading, especially when you're German like me and the Cold War is at the centre of your country's history.

I read this a LONG time ago and cannot really remember it... but I do know I loved all the John Le Carre novels I ever read.

Great Cold War spy novel! I can see how this book made quite an impression for Le Carre as a spy novelist, but the psychological aspects of the characters and their actions is really what kept me reading. If you like thrillers, you owe it to yourself to read this classic.
