As big a fan as I am of this author, I do agree that as good as this novel is, it can't quite compare to his more polished works like, say, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy or A Perfect Spy. If you're still up to it, I'd like to recommend those.

I think this book was poorly written--it was often unclear where dialogue was being summarized, where we were entering Leamas' thoughts, and when it was outright narration. The plot is certainly clever, but having heard so much about this book I was pretty disappointed by LeCarre's style. It went beyond leaving the reader in a suspended state of doubt and into outright obtuseness.
