From the interviews on the audiobook version, it's pretty clear that the author is more than just a little paranoid about living on the grid and the "vast machine." It was meant to scare those of us living normal lives, connected the vast machine, and well, I thought it failed miserably at that goal. Most of it seemed fairly unrealistic, especially in light of the author's real-life attitude towards technology. Story was okay aside from that... I listened through to the end at least.
