A really good book.

Pappillon is a most amazingly determined character.
A little too "raw", maybe, but then thats the way life is, in a penal settlement. The book brings out wonderfully the fact that even those that the society has branded as the "worst" and "most dangerous" men can...

An interesting autobiographical story of human degradation by goverment and the endurance and hope that can survive within one in terrible circumstances. The life and escape of a French prisoner on the Devil's Island penal colony off the coast of French Guyana.

One of my favorite books i've read. This is because it was such an amazing story and always had a lot of action. They also had a movie that i watched and thought was very cool. I'd recommend this book to any one who likes non-fiction books full of action.

Very entertaining true account of ol' Papillon and his life of unjust imprisonment. It is also a very tense read.

Papillon is about Henri Charriere's life on the wrong side of the tracks(self biography). It starts out at his trial where he is being prosecuted for the murder of a man. He pleads not guilty, but he ends up getting hard labor for life. The rest of the book is about his attemps of escape. Throughout the book he meets very compassionate people who help him in his quest for freedom. In the beggining I thought that he was a bad person, and his details frightened me slightly. That changed the further on in the book I was, he had interesting thoughts and views that really opened up my eyes to what kinds of people lived during his life. All the events in the book that he thought were important were extremely detailed. The thing that really annoyed me about this book is that at times you think it was almost over, but then something would mess up his happily ever after, so to speak. If you don't mind death, extreme heartache and 500 pages of Henri's life, then the book itself is actually interesting.
