I have to say that I really didn't like this book very much. Miss Jane Pittmans character was very overbearing and I got bored very easily.

This book is definitely worth reading! It teaches strong morals, and opens the readers mind to racism and other important things in their lives.
Throughout the story several sad things occur to Jane Pittman, right from the beginning she is set free as a slave, but the adults around her are killed almost immediate. Also throughout the book several of Jane Pittman's closest people die, and yet through all the tragedy you can't help but feel hope and courage for Miss Pitman.
The book is extremely heart warming, and not necessarily a quick read, but it will definitely make you want to keep reading until the end.

Remarkable story of a black woman who lives from slavery to the civil rights movement. Gaines has a way of bringing out the eternal value in humanity.

I have to say that I did not like this book very much. I think that the character of Miss Jane Pittman was so strong, she was a little scary. Just my point of view.

The whole time I was reading this book, I thought it was a true story - an autobiography of a 100+ year old woman...turns out Miss Jane is not a real person at all - Ernest Gaines (the author) made everything up - he tells this story so convincingly that you don't realize you are reading fiction. Another thing about this book is that it takes you through many time periods - from freeing of the slaves after the Civil War to the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s. Really powerful.

I had to choose a book for a classic book report for my English class, and after starting and stopping multiple novels, this is the one I decided on. It was fantastic! It really gave me a lot of information about the Civil War era, and although some of it is hard to follow, you will love it nonetheless!

This is a beautiful story of 100 years of a woman's life, from slavery through the civil rights demonstrations of the 60's. It pretty scary how much doesn't change in her area of rural Louisiana over the the course of the book. I was really affected by how much violence and hatred she saw, while still maintaining a strong sense of herself and inner peace. It didn't have the emotional impact on me that "A Lesson Before Dying" had, but I liked the long arc of the story. There's a really smart, and timely, passage about flooding and how foolish we are to think we can hold rivers back with levees. Would definitely recommend it!

An interesting view of the Civil Rights movement, told from the view of a former slave. Fictional, but additionally interesting when you compare it to Ernest Gains real life.

I really enjoyed this book--it was inspiring and enlightening. It's the story of a woman who lived so long that she saw both slavery and the civil rights movement of the 1960s.
