“Similar in style to The Unbearable Lightness of Being, but less depth so-far. ”

As for the novel, haunting. I couldn't sleep all night after reading it. This book could turn even a 'happy go lucky' person into an ardent nihilist.
Weirdly funny in parts - he has an acerbic sense of humour. It's clear from the novel that the author, Houellebecq, has been serially let down in his life. One could infer that he also has issues with women as a result. More than once, Houellebecq has been criticised for the underlying, and sometimes, quite explicit, misogyny that runs throughout.
It really does break your heart though - sad stuff. I couldn't stop crying at the end. It was almost like it induced some sort of sickness in me. Still, I would still describe it as a brilliant novel with interesting ideas, albeit unhealthy ones.”

There are very explicit sexual parts and also some horrifying descriptions of violence. It dives into hugely emotional and scientific insights, both very thought provoking but at the same time extremely depressing. If you are sensitive like me, i would not recommend you read this book. If you don't mind delving into the dark side of the human soul, then give it a try, it is well-written and shockingly honest.”

But he is incredibly smart about taking you to a world where you hope the human race does not end up. For this reason, I think he is amazing.”

Bouncing between hippie communes in Paris and Northern California in the 60's while watching his a free-loving ex-wife bang young boys, the main character is just pathetic. perverted, tormented, and totally unlovable, this guy is the best damned hero to come around since Sartre's Antoine Roquentin! not for everyone.”
