I've been trying to get through this book for nearly 2 weeks and just had to give it up. The storyline is slow, characters not strong enough, lost my interest quickly.

This book was not Ms. Monroe's best, IMHO. There were some great passages/sections, but in general, I felt like it was missing something...?

It took me 2 weeks to finish this book. It was very slow. I enjoy Mary Monroe's writing style, but I may have to find another favorite author if this keeps up.

DELIVER ME FROM EVIL is an enticing book of steamy love scenes, mad, crazy family dysfunction, scary scenarios and a lot of tension. Christine’s life is told in flashbacks so we know her, as well as Wade, quite well. J.R., by his worship of money and family, is also well-developed. This is definitely a novel worth reading. It’s hard to put down.

Mary Monroe's latest offering, Deliver Me From Evil, examines the trials of Christine Thurman, a young woman who seemingly has it all: a millionaire husband, gorgeous home, and true-blue friends. However, true to Monroe fashion, all is not well in paradise. Christine's husband is a control freak and his family are the in-laws from hell, truly taking advantage of her kindness. With an airtight prenuptial agreement that leaves her with little if she initiates a divorce, Christine becomes a `desperate housewife' resorting to an equally desperate and diabolical scheme to free herself from her husband and secure a little traveling money.

If you have guessed things get a bit shady and convoluted, you have guessed correctly. Christine has a promiscuous past having grown up on the wrong side of the tracks with a set of carefree parents. She returns to those roots when plotting her escape and connects with Wade Fisher, an unemployed actor and her first love, who happens to still be living at home with his mother. Together they rekindle their love affair and devise an elaborate kidnapping plot, but things do not quite work out as planned when Wade deviates from the plan with ideas of his own.

The title of the novel leaves me wondering who was actually pleading for deliverance as it surely was not the protagonist, Christine, who seemed to run toward (instead of away from) trouble all her life. I felt the story was a bit unbalanced. For example, there was a great deal of time spent on Christine's childhood, her girlfriends, rocky home life; etc. but the ending did not involve her girlfriends at all and seemed compressed; offering a brief explanation about the lifelong dysfunctional relationship with her parents. In short, although the author tied up all the plotlines, I felt the conclusion seemed a bit rushed and a bit `too' convenient. Regardless of the issues I had with the book, I think fans of drama-filled literature will enjoy the plot twists, steamy sex scenes, and quirky characterizations that Monroe has been known to deliver with flair.
