Didn’t Like It“I hate science fiction, or maybe just this writer. It took me like two years to finally finish this book because I kept getting bored and reading something else. I wish I'd never bothered. Lame post-apocalyptic concept.” see full review » see other reviews » |

It's an unusual and at times unbearable existence, but Chaos soon discovers that his post-nuclear reality may have no connection to the truth. So he takes to the road with a girl named Melinda in order to find answers. As the pair travels through the United States they find that, while each town has been affected differently by the mysterious source of the apocalypse, none of the people they meet can fill in their incomplete memories or answer their questions. Gradually, figures from Chaos's past, including some who appear only under the influence of intravenously administered drugs, make Chaos remember some of his forgotten life as a man named Moon.

“A funny, bizarre, poignant post-apocalyptic road-trip of a novel with some fascinating ideas about how dreams and memories change and shape our reality. If you like your post-apocalypse weird, this is for you.”

I want to give it four, but I don't think I understand it well enough. Unlike a dreamy Murakami book, this one sort of hints at an undercarriage of "meaning" behind the identity drifting, dreaming, and alternate realities. Although I loved reading it, I still am sitting here thinking I missed something. And flattering myself that I'm a reasonably intelligent guy, I'm going to withhold the fourth star and blame the author LOL!”

Yes | No“A fine post-apocalyptic American culture exhumed sci-fi romp along a dreamlike post-apocalypse style road-trip amongst a landscape that the protagonist(s) (and antagonist(s)?) find increasingly surreal as the book goes on.
It is a pretty good follow up to me for his (at the time) semi-contemporary sci-fi stories & novels. Not his best necessarily, but probably not his worst (I'll see about that soon enough).”
“A great sci-fi book that takes place in a post-apocalpytic United States. There's an interesting sub-text involving dreams and their impact on reality as we know it.”

I can't even begin to explain this book, but suffice it to say, it's a masterpiece of surrealist sci-fi by one of the most creative and original writers out there. Read this book!”
