“Its one helluva book! The tone sounds very utopian.... but look through it & so much of it makes sense. Pretty hard to implement though.
Reading it to get some insights about a township I'm designing...”
“This is a remarkable book. It is a guide and a system and a world view all wrapped in one. Unfortunately, it reads like an encyclopedia. I recommend planning on short reading sessions. Spend 15 or 20 minutes reading a pattern or three, followed by 10 to 30 minutes of reflection. Then take a day off or read something else for a bit. I also found that biting off small chunks gave me time to walk around and SEE the patterns in our environment while they were fresh in my memory. ”

It's surprisingly easy to read for it's size due to each "pattern" being encapsulated in just a few pages that can be read piecemeal and still understood. Very insightful. Doesn't just make you think, but changes the way you think about spaces.”

Patterns like "light from two sides" have guided me in finding the most comfortable places to live over the years. "Zen view" is another fantastic pattern that makes a room special.”

He gives guidelines which are essentially rules of thumb to consider when developing anything from a room where you're moving furniture, to building your house (we did), to the development of small towns. This is one of a series of three. Since then he has a giant volume, The Nature of Order. An unusual thinker. Expensive.”
