For me, one of the most important contributions Kanter makes in this volume is her explanation of how certain organizations win and then sustain their ability to "win," be it in business or athletics. Most of the high performance companies that Jim Collins, Jason Jennings, and others have identified are led by CEOs whose names are unfamiliar to the general public. Few of them have been characterized as "charismatic." Coaches such as John Wooden and Pat Summit have earned and deserved their celebrity status but each would insist that every member of their championship teams made a significant contribution to its success. Also, it is no coincidence that many of the companies on Fortune's annual list of those most profitable are also on another list of those most highly admired. Ultimately, winning is the result of a maximum collaborative effort by everyone involved, whatever her or his specific contributions may be.
