“ Nadja Halilbegovich
My childhood under fire
My childhood under fire is a Nedja diary of the years 1992-1995, in which Nedja tells us about how she survived through a war (Yugoslav war). This book won many awards like: Winner of Books for the Teen Age List from the New York Public Library 2007. It’s dedicated to all the innocent victims of war-especially children.
When the war takes place in a city Sarajevo, Nadja & the people living there are trying their best to survive without much food and electricity. They can’t even step out of their houses without the fear of dying. People are drowning in despair, but Nadja is an active performer & public speaker so she is trying her best to give people hope by performing dance or singing with her friends. She reads her poems about war on radio and tells her fellow citizens to stay brave. On the outside she seems strong but in the inside she is scared and upset about all this, so she writes this diary and soon it becomes her friend who listened to all suffering & feelings.
This book is recommended to young adults & teens who likes to read Biography novels or are interested in reading about war because this book is all about a girl who suffered and survived when there was a war going on in her city. It doesn’t really have high vocabulary so maybe kids will like it too, if they are interested.

If i could talk to the author about the story i would ask how she felt living in the war and what it was like living in the horrible conditions.
The person who told the story was a girl named nadja halibegovich. This story was a diary so it was just her talking about her life during a war.
my favorite character was Nadja becuase she was always happy during the war and was good and singing and doing a lot of other things”
“Excellent diary of a teen living through the war in Bosnia--reminiscent of Zlata's Diary. ”
