Very nice novelette by Moacyr Scliar, written many years before Life of Pi, by Yann Martel, and much much better. I think everyone it should read both, though I thought Martel's take has nothing on Max and the Cats. There's much to be said about the simplicity of Scliar's work, and much can be...

Apparently I missed the controversy about Yann Martel's Life of Pi owing a debt to this book until this past month when my friend mentioned it to me. Curious, I picked up a copy and it was okay. Nothing too memorable and nothing compared to Life of Pi.

Supposedly this was the inspiration for Life of Pi. Not sure why we would think that as the story is very different. There is one scene where Max is in a boat with a Jaguar, but that event lasts about 4 pages. I think Life of Pi is a different story completely.

There's much to be said about the simplicity of Scliar's work, and much can be read between the lines. A bona fide master of the Portuguese language, and one writer who can truly entertain.

There are similarities (like the lifeboat and feline), but the two books are radically different for the most part. And Max and the Cats is nowhere near as good as Life of Pi and probably not worth your time...
