The author's note, clarifying the reset & reworked edition, makes one wonder whether one should have gone for the original 1977 edition! The book is easy to read and as someone suggested, the idea of investigating thru library cards & not using the internet etc., in the revised version doesn't make much sense.
The entire story evolves around a young agent Mark Andrews. The lack of depth in certain characters is quite evident and the revision of the edition could have been more tighter. The sub-plot of a love-story between M. Andrews and Dr. Elizabeth Dexter could have been more inter-weaved into the basic plot. The events that follow the lives of Mark & Elizabeth seem quite dramatic, but the character's response seem to be devoid of emotions. The interactions at those times look more superficial.
The characters also seem to be going through their motions without much attachment or seriousness of the matter-at-hand. All the while, the reader can almost predict the way the plot will move forward. A character driven plot with added complexities in the form of sub-plots would have been wonderful. The revised version, perhaps could have had multilayered characters.
This was the first Jeffrey Archer book that I have read and I wonder how the much successful 'Kane and Abel' would be. I will still go ahead and check it out myself ! Till then it's gonna be a different book for this week..... :) ”

And it did. A group is out to kill the president (apparently in the original edition, the president was Ted Kennedy, but, in later editions, it was changed to a female president introduced in this author's other novels; it's fiction so I think he sold out by changing it). An FBI agent makes some stupid and obvious mistakes that are quite frustrating, and it all comes down to a predictable conclusion.”

Hard to find these days but, having read most of his other works, I wanted to round out my collection. Obviously, this is a dated novel, taking place just after Ed Kennedy is sworn in as president after Jimmy Carter. It was a rough time in American history, and Archer weaves the mood of the times into this story. The plot revolves around a junior FBI agent's investigation into an assassination attempt against the new president. He juggles a new relationship with the daughter of a senator who just happens to be a prime suspect in the conspiracy. Good reading, even though a thin novel, and not Archer's best. Archer demonstrates his US political expertise here, despite being an Englishman. This novel goes behind the scenes of Washington DC, though not nearly to the extent his later novel, First Among Equals, does in London's Parliament. My only real complaint with the novel is its lack of major plot twists which I've come to expect from Archer's works. Pretty straight forward story. ”

A plot to kill the female president, the FBI tries to find out who, what, where. Small amount of romance, but an excellent story.”
