I really enjoyed this story. It was like Memoirs of a Geisha in that it follows a small orphaned girl growing up in Kyoto, but it is not only a different storyline, but the entire feeling of the book is different. The writing is beautiful for what the book is--not too girly, not too dramatic,...

I enjoyed the beginning and the end, but the rest was a struggle for me to get through. I have never, in my adult life, even thought about giving up on a book before I was finished reading it, but I was very tempted to do it with this one. In the end, I am glad I finished it, but it is definitely...

This book was about young girl, who when her mother dies, moves to Japan with her Uncle. In Japan, her house sets on fire and the small girl runs away. The young girl is found by a young lady who adopts her into the family. The family believes in the tea religions, and practice tea ceremonies. The book describes these ceremonies in detail and it also describes the life of the two young women as they grow into old, respected ladies.

I enjoyed the beginning and the end, but the rest was a struggle for me to get through. I have never, in my adult life, even thought about giving up on a book before I was finished reading it, but I was very tempted to do it with this one. In the end, I am glad I finished it, but it is definitely not a novel I plan on re-reading LOL

Nice and easy read. Gives a lot of information on Japanese culture which I found really useful. But I didn't like the main character at all so maybe that is why i can't give this book a higher rank.

I'm enjoying this book right now. I just started...so I'm not that far. But, I'm going to Japan this summer and it is so interesting to learn about the culture and the ceremonial routine of tea drinking.

I was hoping for another Asian themed book that flowed well and engrossed me completely. This wasn't it. I was surprised that it made me feel like it dragged on and on. It skipped around a bit and I felt it relied on her sexuality a bit much. The ending was dissapointing as well because it seemed very unrealistic. Sorry, JMHO.

This book was beautifully written and introduced the reader to the subtle nuances inherent to Japanese culture. However, the culmination of the book was dissatisfying. Although it is known that women in that time explored sexuality with one another, the finale of the book changed the theme from an historic time and place novel to an overt representation of breaking the today's moral barriers. In this sense, the novel didn't quite 'gel' for me, because the 'then' of the novel culminated in a 'now' of sociological issues.

This book took a little while to get going, but was good overall. It can be a dense read at times, given the amount of japanese history involved.

The Teahouse Fire was a book that I picked up because it was on sale at Borders. Little did I know I had picked up a book that was not only well written, but full of so much detail I felt as if I was in a teahouse in Japan. The entire book is told by a young girl who had come to Japan with her uncle, having to leave her mother behind. After a fire burns down the home she's living in, she is found by a young Japanese girl named Yukako. So begins a tale of hope, sorrow, and temae (tea ceremony). All in all, this book was amazing, and I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys Japanese history and is looking for a great story.
