A book I keep by my side when working with strings. Great reference and content when I forget certain syntax.

I thought it was about time I understood regular expressions. They seem to crop up frequently in software development and not always where expected. JetBrain's IntelliJ IDE has been using them for some time as part of the search/replace mechanism but they are creeping into other areas as well such as logging/output filtering and complex code migration tasks. They've even been added to the Java 5 Programmer's Certification exam.

So now I'm working my through the book, front-to-back (as frequently urged by the author) and have reached half way through Chapter 2. I love the author's style and the neat typographical additions which really DO help when looking at regular expressions through novice's eyes.

There are only two glaring omissions I can spot so far:

    1. Unlike O'Reilly's Essential CVS there's no fold out/tear out summary or 'cheat' card which would be really handy even from chapter 1.
    2. There are no downloadable examples or rather more usefully the text documents example expressions are applied to. To really understand the examples I've had to download word lists or generate other texts and then adapt the example expressions accordingly. But of course it all helps by checking my understanding.

Also as a very minor point (not even a grumble - just thought I would mention it in case anyone finds this helpful) I couldn't find the port of egrep listed on the author's page for the book to Windows, which is used for the examples in Chapter 1. It turned out to be no bad thing as I've now installed a copy of Cygwin which also gives access to perl, vi(!) etc. if you opt to install them.
