This book reminded me a lot of Ruth Rendell, such as Rendell's ADAM AND EVE AND PINCH ME. I love books that get inside the minds of people who think oddly, yet to them it makes perfect sense! Quite a different feel from Joss's PUCCINI'S GHOSTS, which I also enjoyed very much.

I read this book quite awhile ago and I can remember every creepy twist and turn. If you like books that just get under your skin and leave their mark you'll love this one.

When I started reading this book I found it to be different than I expected. The further you go in this book the more it grabs you. The writing is beautiful and the characters are flawed and fascinating. This won a cwa award although it is far from a typical crime novel. This is more of a story of what happens to people who have never belonged to anyone. Highly recommend.

Ridiculously gripping, and it keeps humming right up until the end.

This was a hard book to read. Deeply sad and desperate characters and chance circumstances. The story is good, so it is worth reading, but be prepared to feel depressed and/or unsettled by much of it.

It was dark, it let us into the minds of some pretty disturbed people, and even though the ending wasn't a surprise, I loved getting there with the characters. For being so off-kilter, it was totally believable and I couldn't get the characters out of my mind.

While I usually read action-packed thrillers, I was rather pleased with this selection that I picked up from the mystery section of my local bookstore. The story isn't overly intense, especially in the beginning which has some slow parts, but for some reason I just couldn't stop thinking about the characters after I'd set the book down. While some of the material is disturbing, it is incredibly mild compared to other popular works (James Patterson, Dean Koontz, Stephen King, etc.). While I initially thought it unlikely, Morag Joss got me to sympathize and relate to the twisted characters who take their obsession with belonging a little too far. This is one of those rare books that has to sink in for awhile before you actually can appreciate its cleverness.

BOTTOM LINE: If you like thrillers that keep you up all night with page-turning action and suspense, this isn't going to be the book for you. The suspense is much more subtle in this novel and might not be enough to keep you reading if you're easily bored. However, if you're someone who enjoys bigger-than-life-but-slightly-wacko characters, you won't be disappointed. You could certainly do much worse than this original and slightly disturbing narrative.
