Sunny Miller had been running from her father all her life. He was an international terrorist, had hounded her mother and her sister, Margreta, until Sunny's mother had killed herself. Sunny now was a courier, carefully moving around so her father couldn't locate her. Chance McCall (actually, Mackenzie) had an intricate plan involving meeting her (he only knew her as Sonia), spending time with her enough to get information about her father from her; he felt that their closeness, if he planned right, would lead to confidence. Sunny had to charter his private plane, which "crashed" into a canyon where they couldn't get out. But in the days Sunny and Chance spent together, trying to survive, they both found that there was at least one person in this world for each of them whom they could deeply love. The information Sunny gave Chance wasn't what he thought it would be; the underhanded plans Chance had made might really make Sunny hate him when she knew them. And the two of them almost were killed just spending time together!
“Aunt Mawis (Maris) is goin' to have a baby. --- She's goin' to foal in de spwing.”Nick, Zane's precocious 3-year-old daughter to Chance.
“It's a box canyon. There's no way out. The good news is, there's water at the far end.”Chance to Sunny after they'd landed the plane.
“But I'm a single woman who travels alone, carrying packages valuable enough that a courier service is hired to deliver them. The people I deliver the packages to are strangers. Think about it. I'd have to be a fool not to carry some means of protection.”Sunny to Chance after he discovered her gun.
“We're in this together. Luck for you I'm one mean son of a bitch when I need to be - lucky for you, unlucky for them.”
“I've kept your cell phone with me. -- Margreta called yesterday.”Chance to Sunny at the hospital.
“I told you. Hell, Sunny, you know I don't live in Des Moines.”Chance to Sunny when they were leaving the hospital.
“You're my son. In all the ways that matter, you're mine.”Wolf to Chance on the night Sunny came to the Mackenzie home.
