I skipped all the menacing enemy paranormal bits & read only the relationship stuff. I liked how the heroine stuck to her guns with the usual Howard alpha male, but the whole "I was an unwanted child; the only reason my mother didn't ABORT me was for the welfare check" got old quick. As in, with the very first mention.
Also I don't really care for the fact that the book ends with a cliffhanger and the follow-ups are written by completely different authors. Not my thing.”

Linda Howard rocks!”

In the world of three of the most popular authors in contemporary romance, these are as real as the humans who live on earth. Creating their own mythology about the battle between good and evil, the Raintree trilogy is about the Raintree and Ansara clans.
Two hundred years ago, the hostility between the two rival clans erupted into a huge pitched battle with the Raintree virtually wiping out the Ansara. The tattered remnants of the Ansara were allowed to live, scattered around the world. Unbeknown to the Raintree, the evil clan has grown in strength and power ready to wage battle and avenge their ancestors' defeat. To weaken their enemies, they target the royal family starting with the Dranir, Dante Raintree.
The book starts with our hero watching our heroine playing at his casino. While Dante usually leaves suspected cheaters to his chief of security, Lorna Clay's unusual winning streak aroused his curiosity. While he refused to believe that she was nothing more than a very clever cheater, meeting her in person would prove him wrong. For when our heroine steps into his office, Dante's element - fire - surges up in more ways than one. Within minutes of realizing Lorna's unique gifts, his casino is on fire and for the very first time in his life, the very element he commands is defeating him, leaving him with only one hope: to tap into Lorna's powers. And as the extent of her powers are revealed to him in the days to come, there also comes the revelation that their enemies have secretly rebuilt in strength and are now ready to engage the Raintree clan in battle.
If not for Linda Howard, I admit that I probably would never have bought this trilogy. I immensely enjoyed many of her books and was wondering what she had come up with in Inferno. Admittedly, I was underwhelmed. As the first part in the trilogy, I expected a bigger and better introduction. I'm afraid I didn't get this. The romance was lacking. Dante's feelings for Lorna needed fleshing out so as not to leave the reader stunned upon reading his realization that he was in love. Huh? Did I skip some pages here? Then there is the suspense, or rather lack thereof. Depending on how you look at it, I'd say the only suspenseful part was the ending because you know that you have no option but to read the next book! One thing that saved this for me was the humor. Lorna's acerbic remarks had me smiling. You go girl!
Overall, this was a mediocre effort from Howard and not exactly a magical story like the characters are. However, I have read the other two books and pleased to say that they saved this trilogy. ”
“Two hundred years after the Raintree clan defeated and abandoned them on a small Caribbean Island, the Ansara wizards are rising again to take on their bitterest foes. Despite their extraordinary powers and supernatural origin, the Raintree have largely blended into the modern world. They are bankers, cops, husbands, wives and lovers in the society of humankind. But now, from Nevada to North Carolina, the rejoined battle will measure the endurance of their people. It will test their loyalties and relationships. And it will force upon them all new lives they could barely have imagined before.”

I prefer a book to stand on its own with a beginning and an end, with out a sequel to make the book complete and understandable.”

My only complaint is that there is a HUGE cliff-hanger at the end. I prefer my books neatly wrapped up, even if they are intended to be a series.”
“Raintree: Inferno is the first in a trilogy with each book being written by a different author. The first book by Linda Howard is a quick, entertaining read. While the plot stays true to the form of good vs. evil, Ms. Howard sprinkles enough humor and romance to keep the reader interested.
