  • Nia/Niniane: The main character of the story. A member of the Bluefin Clan and daughter of Pontus and Tayla and granddaughter to Dyonis, a retired Avatar. She has legs, as some of the mermyds do, and highly human features. She is highly qualified for becoming an young Avatar.
  • Dyonis: Nia's grandfather who is a former Avatar.
  • Ar'an: The Farworlder King that is joined to Dyonis.
  • Cephan: Member of the Sting-Ray Clan. A candidate for the Avatar trials and is romantically interested in Nia.
  • Garun: The Bluefin candidate for the Avatar trials. He is selfish and works in the Archives. What he lacks in physical strength and endurance he makes up for with knowledge.
  • Callimar: Nia's best friend. She is a member of the Sun-Fish Clan.
  • Ma'el: A former Avatar. The Farworlder he is joined to is named Joab.
  • Joab: The Farworlder King that is joined to Ma'el.
