This is a great book crafted to show what happens when the faithful of different beliefs collide.

It is such a terrible book. I couldn't even finish it. Ican't believe it has won so many awards.

An incredible book...some of the best character development I've read in a long time. I miss the characters now that I'm done with the book and wish to read more about what they are up to. This is a wonderful story about irony and being careful about what you wish for. I highly recommend it.

A wonderfully written book set in the Sudan that gives you much to think about. The author writes that in Africa you do not have the luxury of deciding between what is right or wrong but only do what is necessary. Uhmmmmm. . . .

Pretty interesting book. A little heavy on airplane politics. I enjoyed the characters (I found Quinette and Ibrahim's stories especially interesting). I got depressed near the end with all the violence, the constant killing, uprooting, destroying. I hope and pray that someday peace is an actuality in Sudan. Worth reading.

I think this to be a fascinating and compelling novel. Caputo masterfully portrays the complications of involving oneself, and trying to "help" others, in a foreign, poverty- and war-bound society. I found myself able to sympathize in some way with all Caputo's tragic, very different and very human characters.

Dec 07. Adult. Engaging characters form the basis of this novel about life within Sudan and the aid workers and others who are engaged in the relief effort. Widely differing attitudes and personal philosophies are portrayed in order to paint a rich portrait. Plot wanders at times, and story has some leaps of faith needed to believe. Overall though, a good read

Broad novel with gritty characters. Gripping a la Poisonwood Bible.

I GREW TO LOVE THIS WORDY AND ENLIGHTENING NOVEL. ESPECIALLY MEANINGFUL WAS THAT THERE WERE EXACTLY NO PURE HEROES . EVERY CHARACTER HAD A GLARING WEAKNESS AND FITZHUGH MARTIN TURNED OUT TO BE THE BEST OF THE LOT EVEN THOUGH HE WAS A LESSER CHARACTER THROUGHOUT THE STORY. THAT'S MY OPINION IN A FEW WORDS. I KNEW TOTALLY NOTHING ABOUT SUDAN AND NOW THAT IS LESS TRUE.
