Liked It“I read this book when I was in 8th grade and it has stayed with me ever since. I especially liked the perspective of a girl about my age, who was figuring things out, as the last woman on the planet. Essential reading I'd say, for young women.” see full review » see other reviews » |
“Very tense and atmospheric account of survival. Like The Diary of Anne-Frank meets a post-nuclear holocaust story. Also learned a lot about farming and made me wonder how useless I'd be in a similar situation.”

I love the little valley but the menace presented by the stranger is heightened because it's seen from the eyes of a child. I think this was my first foray into apocalyptic writing. ”

Helped me deal with my fear of nuclear war and, upon reading it again, am struck by how easily I, as a not-very-practicing Jew, identified with a very churchy young protagonist. I suppose that is owed to the novel's emphasis on serving as a kind of survival plan for the non-proselytizing, morally-centered girl as she comes of age. I still think this book rocks and enjoyed it upon review. I'd give it to my pre-teen.”

I remember it being well written, and I certainly cared about the heroine, but it struck me as illogical that she would have survived in this nice little valley. And the group discussion of it was rather pitiful. Nuclear holocaust doesn't strike me as being a good topic for children's books. Clearly my teachers adhered to the philosophy articulated by Top Dollar in The Crow "childhood's over when you learn you are going to die."”
