No one can understand the Japanese culture without understanding first the concept of Bushido, the Way of the Samurai. Inazo Nitobe, a Japanese Christian, writes the first Japanese Christian book that tackles on the Christian view of Bushido and how the Japanese concept of honor, justice, duty of loyalty, politeness, courage, spirit of daring and death can also be found in Scripture. Written in the year 1905, Nitobe had set out to write a book of Japanese culture to bridge the West and Japan. The text is enlightening, filled with sources from the Scriptures, and various ancient Japanese texts and accounts of samurais, and concludes that Christianity is needed in order to balance the concept of death and life in the mind of the Japanese. The "Chivalry of Europe" and the "Bushido of Japan" is often compared and contrasted. A book worth a space in the shelf of any collector of Japanese Literature.
