I used this book for study with a NEH seminar along with Mary Chestnut's Civil War and the collected writings of Lincoln. It is a wonderful book for middle school students to read so as to become aquainted with the subject of slaveryfrom a first person perspective. Though Douglass rewrote his autobiography, I find this text to be more approachable to teens.
