With no male heir to assume the throne in the wake of Louis X's death, fierce struggles erupt throughout France to seize rule of the kingdom. Three male relatives of Louis X—his brother, the Duke of Poitiers; his uncle, the Count of Valois; and his cousin, the Duke of Burgundy fight amongst themselves. Meanwhile, the Count of Poitiers resorts to an ancient law to justify his right to the throne, adapting it cleverly to suit his purposes.
