Great review of data about people born in the 70's to 90's, called Gen Xer's or Generation Me. I read it to understand my students better, as well as my own children. The most impacting information to me was that kids who were raised on "you can do anything or be anything you put your mind to"...

As interesting as it is depressing. Abandon hope, all ye who were born between 1970 and yesterday.

Intersting concept, written from a single perspective. Was more of a persuasive book that tried to get the reader to believe what she was saying. I don't know that it was well validated.

Great review of data about people born in the 70's to 90's, called Gen Xer's or Generation Me. I read it to understand my students better, as well as my own children. The most impacting information to me was that kids who were raised on "you can do anything or be anything you put your mind to" and all of the positive self-esteem training, are hitting the wall when in their mid-20's when jobs and careers don't develop they they were told they would. Life is pretty hard and they haven't been as prepared for hardship and perserverance as earlier generations and if you add their resulting cynicism to that, you'll understand them better. You can't stereotype groups and be accurate, but it'll explain a lot.

Now I understand why my students are the way they are. Definitely a must-read for teachers!

I'm about halfway through this book and I agree with some of what people have already said, Gen Me'ers already do know quite a bit of what she's saying. I have gotten my greatest laughs so far when discussing it with my baby boomer parents. It's hilarious to see how defensive people can get! Def thought provoking...

This is a pretty good description, as near as I can tell, of the current crop of young adults and the challenges they face in today's world. The author lacks insight into what her own generation might be good or bad at handling in the future -- she did not see the recession coming, for instance, or the bursting of the real-estate bubble that has changed everything for everyone. True to the self-involved type she describes, Twenge offers no insights into how GenMe interacts with those born in other generations. She also lets a lot of her own prejudices leak into the text, for instance her curious horror of living in a condominium. It talked a lot, in short, but I'm not sure I learned that much from it.

I struggle to relate to my students and try to see their perspectives on the important things in life. This enlightening book helped me to understand things a little better. More importantly, it shed some light on my own generation and the reasons why today's youth are as they are. A great read for those willing to reexamine their own lives and willing to keep an open mind towards the future that the baby boomer generation has created.
