Best book on the subject! I tried reading the Will Eisner book but it bored me to death

Ideal primer for anyone new to comics, and essential reading for any existing comic-fans.

McCloud does a brilliant job of explaining, not just how to read comics, but how and why the medium works so well, and what makes it unique. He does all of this with simple, yet information-packed art and a wonderful sense of whimsy. He treats comics as a unique form of literature that has its own strengths and advantages.

I like Scott McCloud and I like his writing but I wish it would be more academic instead of introductory-level-introduction-to-comics-y. See also: I whine about everything. This is a good book, regardless of unfounded expectations I had upon it.

Enjoyable, a good start to some real thought about what it means to read a comic.

A very enlightening read. It gave me a much deeper appreciation and understanding of comics and how they "work." Lots of stuff to think about the next time I pick up a graphic novel :)

This was an awesome book. I have never been a big fan of comics but my dad recommended this book to me and now that I’ve read it I’m willing to give them another shot. What makes this book great is that it taught me a lot about art in general…not just comics. It’s written as a comic book so it’s full of examples and clever illustrations. While it has plenty eye candy, children and younger teens may not fully appreciate the value and some discussions may be lost on them. I recommend this to anyone who loves art and art history.
