In New York, there's a troll under the Brooklyn Bridge, a boggle in Central Park, and a beautiful vampire in a penthouse on the Upper East Side. Of course, most humans are oblivious to this, but Cal Leandros is only half-human. His father's dark lineage is the stuff of nightmares-and he and... read more

Cal and Niko Leandros have been on the run for four years from Grendels (a.k.a. the Auphe). These creatures are horrifying and live for only one purpose: to bring chaos wherever they go.
And they want Cal.
Living in New York, the two brothers do all they can to get some answers, including fighting a huge and largely disfigured troll under the Brooklyn Bridge and interrogating a sex-loving puck named Goodfellow. But the clock is ticking, and Niko and Cal need to figure out the Grendels' plan before all hell breaks loose.

Characters edit see section history

  • Caliban "Cal" Leandros: The main character and Niko Leandros's half brother. Cal is half human and half Grendel, but all he wants is a normal life for his brother and himself. Lazy as hell but just as funny, Cal is a loyal brother and a trustworthy friend.
  • Niko "Nik" Leandros: Cal's half brother (although you wouldn't know it by how close the two are). Niko is a full-blooded human, but his skills with the sword make one question that statement. He lives with the intention of keeping his younger brother safe no matter what and is wiser than his years.
  • Robin Goodfellow: A car salesman and a puck with an insatiable sexual appetite. Despite his carefree outward appearance, it is clear that underneath he is lonely and wishes for a friend, which he hopes to find in Cal and Niko. He assists the brothers in their misadventures to find information about the Grendels.
  • Darkling: An evil monster with great powers, including possession.
  • Promise Nottinger: A beautiful vampire who attempts to help Niko and co. Though she isn't seen very much in this first book, she is better developed in the books to come and is important to the story, nontheless.
  • Samuel: Drummer of a band that plays at Cal's bar.
  • Rafferty Jeftichew: Healer
  • Georgina "George" King: Young psychic/seer of New York City. Hangs out in a soda shop.
  • Grendels: The Auphe, or elves, depending on who you ask. Ravenous, violent creatures from the underground world of Tumulus.
  • Meredith: One of Cal's co-workers
  • Sophia: Cal and Niko's mother
  • Abbagor: The troll under the Brooklyn Bridge.
