“Extremely interesting and highlighted just how much I don't know about the "Arab world". I remain a little sceptical about the apparent preference for Russian imperialism (what else could one call the USSR) over US imperialism. It seems based on the idea that imperialism with a socialist/communist face is intrinsically better than other western imperialism. Made me even more ashamed of the Howard Government.
Probably worth reading again at some stage - but need something more up-to-date first.
Some interesting comments on the "birth" and "death" of history.”
“It is a crash course on World history. It answered all the questions I had about some World events are turning out the way they are. From Arab-Israel conflict, terrorism and the rise of the Taliban, Islam and modernity, Islam in the achipelago,to the history of Pakistan and the partition of 1948, the House of Saud, and alot of other enlightening issues. It is simply a must read for anyone who is curious as to how things are unfolding in this World today. It exposes America’s role in the rise of the Taliban, her two faces where democracy is concerning. Permitting martial Law in some countries and monarchy and then invading another country to restore democracy, her friendship with Israel which is detrimental to Arabs and other foreign policies that do not serve other people’s intrest, only America’s. It dealt, in detail, with the reason some people do not like America and why America is prone to terrorist attacks. It is a very enlightening book indeed and an eye opener.
The author is an 'atheist -muslim' of Pakistan origin, or so he terms himself. As far as I am concerned, there is nothing like an atheist Muslim. You are either a Muslim or you are not. My criticism of the book is eventhough the author has no regard for any religion, his disregard for Islam is most evident probably because he is more exposed to Islam then other religions coming from a predominantly muslim Country and growing up a muslim because it wasn't till his adulthood that he renounced Islam. He himself mentioned that he never learnt or followed the Islamic teachings, nor did his parents. I therefore do not know how he suddenly became so knowledgeable about the religion. Granted , there are thousands of texts you can pick up and read about the religion. But Islam is unique in the sense that you need further explanations most of the time to these texts.Somethings are not understood at face value. For example in the Quran, some verses have been repealed by others and the previous ones still remain in the Quran. A typical example is the directive on drinking. The earlier verse mentioned it as permissible but frowned at and the later one clearly prohibited it.If you take the first at value, you may think it is permissible to drink in Islam. I clearly found most of his writing about Islam offensive, myopic, insulting and not knowledgeable.
Secondly, the style of writing is tiring and tedious. It makes the message in the book not easily understandable. This made me take 3 good years to read the book eventhough it had so much information I was eager to learn. In my heart I want to start reading it again but when I think about the rhetoric and the style, I get discouraged.”
