- Daniel, aka Sinbad: Boy who runs away from boarding school to look for the sea, subject of fifth story (Celui qui n'avait jamais vu la mer)
- Alia: Girl who lives in a makeshift settlement called La Digue des Francaises; sixth story is told from her viewpoint (Hazaran)
- Martin: Unusual man who lives in La Digue des Francaises; main character of the story (Hazaran)
- Petite Croix: Girl who sits on a mountainside. Main character of seventh story (Peuple du ciel)
