A heart touching story of children from very poor family. Children who never loose hope even during the worst situation. They fight with the adverse situations and finally come out with them. The discription of ups and downs in life of the villagers at sea coast seems to be realistic. A greate book by Anita Desai.

Although I procrastinated on starting this book, as it didn't really sound all that interesting on the jacket description, I got into it after the first chapter. Initially, I was annoyed with Erik but once he got into his own "quest" for his grandmother's grave things became quite interesting. In some ways, the atmosphere reminds me of the Welle's flick about Mexico - complete with Marlene Dietrich-like character. However, Desai never fails to weave dreamy landscapes replete with sensory description. I held my breath during the Day of the Dead graveyard scene, as there was something so poignant about his meeting with the woman. However, I was disappointed by the ending - I wanted to know what Erik was going to do with what he'd discovered - and how he and Em would wind up.

actually i read this book because it was part of my english literature class during my matriculation. initially i dont really understand this story as my english language is not very well at that time. but thanks to my Madam because she make "learning english is fun" for me and my friends :)

i really attracted to this story about a girl who lived in a village with her sick mother, "useless" father, and her siblings. she gone through a lot of misery and challenging and end up with a happy ending. no pain, no gain. to success, we must have spirit and never ever give up. make the difficulties as our motivation to be successful. everything happen must has their reasons. so dont give up easily before you try to solve the problems!

A wonderful and inspiring story. With rich description of Indian culture and wonderful plot, I find it hard to put down the book till the very end. It is a story of family, growth and change. Showing the clash between traditional and modern, it reminds us the importance of education. Education is actually a life-long process that help us to change. In order to change our lifestyle, we must first change ourselves.

A book which describes the life of a poor family with a drunken family in a small village. The story revolves around the family, describing the society, livelyhood of fishermen and their state of mind. But the happy thing about the story is that, the story ends well, it says that dont loose heart, sun will rise, morning will arrive darkness have to go
