This is the 2nd book in the trilogy. It is pretty good as science fiction goes. This entire book is from the perspective of the aliens and Zahn has tried to make them as sympathetic and "human-like" as possible. He does a good job of it, too.

Not as good as his Star Wars books but still a very good option for reading a good sci-fi book.

In this second book of three, Pheylan has been rescued by his brother Aric and the Commonwealth continues to dealw with a deadly and dangerous agressor: the Zhirrzh. The races are more clearly developed, and even more of the Zhirrzh become likeable characters as the war continues between the Zhirrzh and the Commonwealth. Enter the Mrachianis - and decide for yourself whether they are as helpless as they seem - or whether they are indeed manipulating both species to their own benefit.

I've noticed reviews on Amazon complaining about how the plot twist for the series is deathly obvious, even early in the first book. That's sorta the point. The alien race is, given the circumstances which they find themselves in, and with the knowledge which they have of the situation, perfectly justified in declaring war on the humans. And vice-versa; the humans are in every way, based on what they know of the situation, completely justified in declaring war on the aliens. (The plot twist being how both sides are justified in claiming that the other side started the war by unprovoked hostilities.)
The whole approach assumes that the reader has figured out this twist while reading the first book, otherwise Zahn's approach to the story falls apart. Granted, it adds a thick layer of predictability to the plot, but in my opinion, the space between the obvious end and the first few pages more than makes up for the predictable end. ("Oh... so this was all a terrible, but unavoidable, misunderstanding.")

Humans meet aliens. humans try to communicate with aliens. Aliens start shooting. And that's just chapter one. This is a well written series, but if you can't figure out how the 3rd book ends after 50 pages of the first book I'd be surprised.
