Gap Creek: The Story of a Marriage

by Robert Morgan

Oprah Book Club® Selection, January 2000: Robert Morgan's Gap Creek opens with one wrenching death and ends with another. In between, this novel of turn-of-the-century Appalachian life works in fire, flood, swindlers, sickness, and starvation--a truly biblical assortment of plagues, all visited on the sturdy shoulders of 17-year-old Julie Harmon. Being a country girl myself, I really identified with this book, even the hog killings and all the work it took to put up a garden. This book is hard to take at times when we see characters go through trials poverty often brings, but it is rich in endurance and hope when it seems there is none on the horizon.

A raw portrait of basic day-to-day survival in an age very far removed from our modern day conveniences.

I whipped right through this book! Something about the way it was written made me want to just keep on reading. It's the story of a young woman living in the Appalachian Mountains at the turn of the century. She works hard and endures many hardships. It's so amazing to think about how much life has changed in America in just 100 years!!

I thought this book was very disappointing. I finished the book with the hope that something (anything!) would be positive in that girl's life. It was too depressing in every way possible.

This was a well-written book, but so depressing. I felt like I was in a very long country music song. Can anything more happen to these people???

In the end though, after all that devastation, there was hope in the final line. I was happy to finish this one.

A pert story about farming in early America in the Appalacian region. Charming characters and well crafted story telling by Robert Morgan.

This book was a quick read! I really loved the entire story and wished that it was a series! I also wanted my friends to read it so we could discuss it. Very entertaining book!
