It takes what is known about the real principal characters, especially the probable scapegoat, Oswald, and creates in the book a...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“Libra, by John DeLillo, gives some fictional, realistic inside information on the Kennedy assassination, showing the life of Lee Harvey Oswald. From his beginnings as a dyslexic, abusive child, to a Leftist and Communist adult, this book gives anybody some insight into what it was like to shoot the president. A pretty good read if you like history.”

It goes back and forth from one point in time to another with many different characters, so it can be difficult for some to grasp right off. It adds a bit of fiction to real American history, and makes it very believable. It completely got me into the mind of Lee Harvey Oswald. ”

Noted in the biographical information that DD currently resided in the very town where the train was stopped. I look up and he is getting on the train. Naturally, I put him in a head-lock.*
*Part of this story is untrue.”
“Favorite DeLillo novel of all time. Just...beautifully crafted. ”

In many authors hands this would be a simple thriller but to Dellillo it is a lot more. Astrology is used as a metaphor throughout with Oswald's own sun sign used as the title. ”

Kennedy’s assassination was to big to be attributed to one lone gun nut. I’ve read book after a book that introduces one more startling connection. Did you know that CIA had put together an assassination team to kill Castro? Can you believe that parts of Kennedy’s brain had been removed from the autopsy table and never been recovered? Lee Harvey Oswald was suspected of being a secret agent of the KGB! Reading this stuff is so wild and woolly, it’s like you are reading a novel..
That’s why reading thenovel, Don Delillo’s “Libra” is so chilling. The author takes us through the events that bring Oswald and Kennedy to Dallas on November 22, 1963. He gives us special insight into the mystery of the iconic loner, and at the same time he touches upon the secret team and their preparations.
I suppose that’s why Delillo chose to name his book “Libra”. Oswald was born a Libran under the zodiac sign of the scales. His development through the novel represents a balancing of the scales. For every movement there is a counter movement, and for all the love, there is the hate. For every hopeless dreamer , there are those who would kill to preserve the status quo.
Oswald bridges the gap. He connects our deepest fears to our greatest dreams. When Oswald takes his position in the sniper’s den of the Texas School Book Depository, John F. Kennedy is en route to making profound changes in this country.
“Libra”illustrates the violent intersection of two opposing forces.”
“I decided not to read this because it's fact and fiction. I didn't realize it when I reserved it from the library! I'm bringing it back!”

Its actually a faction [factual fiction] of Lee Harvey Oswald and how he ends up killing John F Kennedy. Its close enough to the content of the Oliver Stone movie JFK to imagine that it must have served as a primary source of that film.”
