Brian McLaren’s book, A New Kind of Christian, is exceptional in a number of ways.

It is exceptional in style. True to his own convictions about the importance (and effectiveness) of “story” and experience, he makes the case for a new kind of Christian by weaving a tale of a burned-out...

Not a great work of fiction. It functions better as a work of theology and just happens to have characters.

This was challenging read of intellectual modern vs post-modern concepts. However, I enjoyed this book because it made me think and ponder Christianity's influence in our culture and what being a Christian looks like in an every changing society of skeptics. I liked the phrase "a new kind of Christian" as a person not just using their Christianity as a label, or because they attend a weekly service, but as one moved by the living Spirit of Christ to love others out of their relationship with him. Why does that need any further definition?

Interesting take on Christianity, but the writing style is uninspired and the story contrived . It's an attempt to change from a "modernist" hard and fast view of Christianity with its rational dogma to a Post-Modern return to the primacy of being and doing good over adherence to firm religious rules. Good idea, but It was startling to have the author refer to liberals as the former bad guys.

A really nice story about what many christians are struggling with today. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a more illustrative look at what many are thinking but not saying.

Provocative consideration of transitioning from Modern to Post-Modern age, and what that means for Christian thinkers and leaders. Leaves me hopeful that someday we can get beyond the unhealthy and tiresome Liberal/Conservative axis on which almost all debate and dialogue seems stuck, and move forward.

I would reccomend this book for the same reason I recommend Communist Manifesto to everyone I know who is interested in politics.... So you can be informed and understand where the root of many of the faulty concepts in theology today come from. McClaren is a new ager who has unfortunately mislead many to believe he is a voice for and from within the Christian culture. He and those like him (ie. Robb Bell et al) have used that influence to confuse and mislead many frustrated and well-intentioned Christians down a path of revisionism and heresy.
