Rhys, these days, is largely discussed in relation to her late masterpiece Wide Sargasso Sea. Good Morning, Midnight is one of several novels she wrote in the 1930s. It goes to show that her strong sense of narrative intimacy was always present as she sketches the events in the life of a woman tumbling into middle-age with little awareness and much psychological (and some chemical) self-abuse. Slightly autobiographical, but mostly worth reading for the strong sense of time, place and the acheivement of rendering a character so completely in so few words/pages.
