Published four years after her phenomenally successful first novel, The Outsiders, That Was Then, This Is Now confirmed S. E. Hinton's place in the canon of young adult literature. Characters/People edit see section history

  • Bryon: Mark's partner in crime, these guys love to make a couple bucks out of conning some buff guys in a game of pool. Bryon is the slightly more thoughtful, considerate one out of the duo, not to say Mark is that crude, he just isn't as attentive to his thoughts and faithful to small promises. Bryon soon starts to take in interest in M&Ms sis, Cathy, as he still has a lost feeling which implies he isn't sure what's going on in the future, as money problems start to worry him
  • Mark: As said previously, he is a little more lenient in borrowing money he can't repay and pushing to limits Bryon might hesitate on. By the way, I forgot to mention they are not brothers, but best friends due to an unfortunate tragedy upon Mark's parents, resulting in living with his pal for almost all his life. Realizing the financial rut they are stuck in (with urgency and desperation), Mark goes to lengths that may ruin his life and friendship forever.
  • M&M: This lost little kid never seems all there, but he still tugs heartstrings as he symbolizes all the children in the world who still have families that lack a lot.
  • Charlie: Charlie is the bartender at Charlie's Bar and he routinely lets Mark and Bryon pay on credit and hustle other men at the pool tables.
  • Angela Shepard: Bryon's ex- girlfriend
  • Ponyboy Curtis: The main character in S. E. Hinton's first book, The Outsiders. Bryon does not like Ponyboy.
