enjoyed muchly. gave me a deeper understanding that the problems i face in my small-small software projects are universal. humbling in parts, and the fact that i have downloaded the Chandler app that the book talks of adds more.

Relatively boring narrative but interesting from a slow motion car crash standpoint and because of the overview of the history of the discipline of computer science.

Dreaming in Code is a scary book, the kind of book that makes you wonder if it is really wise to keep pursuing the vain ambition of writing software. By telling the storing of Chandler, an open source project aimed at revolutionize Personal Information Management tools, the author takes us deep in the moving sands of software development. The most daunting aspect of the book is the following: if the best developers in the world gathered together under the supervision of a level 5 leader (Mitch Kapor) struggle to build software like the rest of us mortals do our pesky daily jobs, then is there any hope? Maybe hope is in the unintentional software we build while intending to build something else. We got Ruby on Rails, Blogger and Flickr that way, after all.

If you've been in the software industry this book is sadly all too familiar. Having a good author document the process may help friends and neighbors co-miserate.

Fascinating and engrossing to a point -- but very niche. I can't imagine anyone outside of software or technology-related interests having the patience for this long examination of a particular software project and of software development and methodology in general. Seems like it could have been a great 2,000-word essay instead.

excellent. reads like chicken soup for the programmer's soul and a big wakeup call for project managers. I read it and quickly passed it on to my CEO.
