Gregory Bridgerton believes in love - for good reason. His parents had loved each other dearly, and each of his seven siblings had fallen in love and gotten married before him. And when he sees the beautiful Hermione Watson, he falls instantly in love with her. But unfortunately, Hermione is in love with another man. Luckily for Gregory, Hermione's best friend Lady Lucinda (Lucy) doesn't believe that the man Hermione loves is right for her, so she promises to help Gregory win Hermione's heart. Thus begins this wonderful romantic romp in Regency England.
Julia Quinn has been called the modern Jane Austen by some. I'm not sure if I would go that far, but her novels contain many of the same elements, and they are done well. There's witty banter, characters you love, villians you despise, and more witty banter (she's known for the humor in her books). This is the eighth novel in her Bridgerton series, which features the eight siblings of the large and loving Bridgerton family. I love this series and am sad to see it come to an end. But the good thing is that they are all on my keeper shelf, and I can re-read at my leisure :-)
Here's a sample of the wit in the book from a conversation between Lady Lucinda and Gregory's sister-in-law, Lady Bridgerton:
"And you, Lady Lucinda, will be escorted by Mr. Berbrooke." She smiled weakly, almost in apology. "He is a relation of sorts," she added.
"A relation?" Lucy echoed. "Of sorts?"
"Yes. My husband's brother's wife's sister is married to his brother."
"Oh." Lucy kept her expression bland. "Then you are close?"
