Didn’t Like It“very interesting novel. Covers college life in academia setting with runners and artists to boot. Certainly, Clarifies the relationship between Lynley and Lady Helen. More time and research could have been implemented in describing certain characteristics of deaf people. The character Gareth ,...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“My sister gave me this novel as an example of a good mystery, and I agree it's a well-written, compelling story with some interesting complexities: a beautiful deaf homicide victim with a history of promiscuity; several suspects with the motive and opportunity to have committed the murder; a Scotland Yard Inspector with his own personal battle (unrequited love); another officer with her own personal battle (a mother with Alzheimer's); and one more subplot involving a rocky marriage. ”

Her father abandoned his first wife, a bitter, manipulative, vengeful woman. Elena was a child. His guilt for leaving her is complicated by his pride, his eagerness that she not be seen as different yet he treats her as different. Relationships are key to solving the murder, but they are hard to ferret out. The relationship between Helen and Lynley parallels the difficulties the key players face. I've read all the Inspector Lynley novels now, and I will miss the characters. I call that a successful series. (I admit to disliking two of them.)”

Worth reading for the continuing story of course, but others would do better to choose anotherone of the series. ”

More time and research could have been implemented in describing certain characteristics of deaf people. The character Gareth , came off as a blithering nonverbal malcontent. Having taken sign language in college, I was a bit insulted when it came to this part of the story. The Anthony's ex-wife's behavior was despicable.”

“Slow moving at times, but memorable. This is the first Elizabeth George mystery I've read so I don't know how it compares to her other novels. The father's relationship with his daughter, Elena, did not ring. But the author's attention to detail and changing narrative perspective made up for the deficit. Thoughtful ending.”
