  • Gideon Davies: Child violin prodigy now unable to play. He is haunted by his inability to remember his childhood.
  • Richard Davies: Gideon's father. He set his life up around his son's genius.
  • Liberty (Libby) Neale: American, friend and wanna-be lover to Gideon.
  • Katja Wolfe: Nanny to Sonia. Served 20 years for the death of Sonia Davies. Now out on parole. Ambitious and self centered.
  • Yasmin Edwards: Katja's lover, mother to 11 yr. old Daniel. Sent to prison for 5 years for stabbing her husband who beat and maimed her face.
  • Malcom Webberly: DI in the Sonia Davies case, married to Frances Webberly, father to Miranda.
  • DI Thomas Lynley: Urbane, titled, underneath the facade, layers of guilt and self-questioning.
  • Barbara Havers: DC- Lynley's partner- prone to go her own way, for which she often gets into trouble. Trying to get restored to her former position.

  • Eugenie Davies: Mother of Gideon. She left home suddenly when he was young and away on a trip with his father. She is a victim fairly quickly in the book.
  • Katja Wolff: Sort of nanny to Gideon's little sister, Sonia. She has big ambitions to become a fashion designer. She had a dramatic escape from East Germany, which gave her her 15 minutes of fame.
  • Jill Foster: Fiancee of Gideon's father. Pregnant with is child. TV producer of costume dramas on the BBC.
  • Dr. Rose: Gideon's therapist. She only appears in Gideon's journal writing.
  • Sonia, aka Sosy: Gideon's fragile little sister. Born with Down's Syndrome and many physical problems requiring frequent hospitalization.
  • Raphael Robson: Gideon's violin instructor. Lives in the house with the family.
  • Leach: Inspector Leach. Partner of Webberly in their younger days during the murder of Sonia.
  • Helen: Tommy's wife. Glib, elegant, sympathetic, perspicacious
  • Pitchley: Mystery man. Lodger.
  • Frances: Webberly's wife. Agorophobic.

  • Sarah-jane Beckett: Gideon's tutor who lived in the family home. She is fond of the lodger, jealous of the nanny. She is also ambitious and shallow.

  • Tommy: Inspector Lynley. In this one, he is conflicted about Helen's pregnancy.
  • Katie: Friend of Katja's when she was the nanny. Talked about sex all the time. Would not lie for Katja. Katja claimed she left Sonia for a minute to take a call from Katie. Gideon eventually has a brief meeting with her.
  • Deborah: St. James' wife. Former lover of Lynley. Photographer. Infertile.
  • Robbie
  • Malcolm: Inspector Webberly. We learn a lot about him in this one. He is Hillier's brother-in-law. He is also a friend and advocate of Tommy. He advocated for Havers to keep her job.
  • Simon: St. James. Forensic scientist. Tommy's friend. Crippled in earlier stories when he and Tommy had gotten drunk and Tommy wrecked the car. Source of guilt for Tommy, envy since he married Deborah, yet loyal friend.
  • Randie: aka Miranda Webberly, Malcolm's daughter
  • Major Wiley: In love with Gideon's mother. Very former British military of the stiff upper lip variety. Runs a bookshop.
  • Harriet Lewis
  • Rock: Husband of Libby, also her employer, also a womanizer and user
  • Ian Staines: Brother of Eugenie Davies. Looking to get rich quick. Wants money from Eugenie.
  • Virginia: Mentally retarded young woman.
  • Grandfather: Gideon's grandfather was a prisoner of war and did not escape unscathed. Mentally unbalanced, he raves and rails at home and sometimes has to be sent to hospitals or rest homes. He demeans everyone, but he insists that Gideon be given all the attention.
  • Gran: Gideon's grandmother seems to spend all her time trying to calm the grandfather.
